32 Favors. 32 Good Deeds. 32 Things For Me. Over the course of my 32nd year.

32 Favors. 32 Good Deeds. 32 Things For Me. Over the course of my 32nd year.

When you fly on an airplane, there are explicit instructions about how to use the oxygen mask in the event of change in cabin pressure: “place the oxygen mask on yourself and then place the mask on the person sitting next to you,” presumably a child or someone who requires your assistance. Only very recently did I fully comprehend and appreciate this concept. In order to help others to the best of our ability, we must first take care of ourselves.

Looking after oneself, one looks after others.
Looking after others, one looks after oneself.

– The Buddha

As mentioned in the introductory post, Nanci Besser has explained why she felt nothing in her life had changed the two times she participated in 32 Favors. She was putting the oxygen mask on others and sacrificing herself in the process. Noble, but martyrdom is a thing of the past. And it should be. In order to truly be of service, you first need to pay rent, eat, and have enough security to empower yourself. This provides a level happiness, ease, and faith which enables you to be your best self and magnifies your power to help others.

Easier said, than done.

Giving back to my community is ingrained in my DNA and enforced by my family. In the Jewish religion, we believe in mitzvot and tikkun o’lam. Mitzvot can be defined simply as “good deeds;” giving of yourself to others […]

Nanci Besser’s ’32 Favors’ – an introduction and a pledge.

  • Welcome to 32 Favors.

Nanci Besser’s ’32 Favors’ – an introduction and a pledge.

Nanci Besser knows pain. After a terrible car accident where she nearly lost her life, and other traumatic experiences in love and loss, Besser took it upon herself to be proactive in her healing process. Through pilates, her background in psychology, and her magical hands and heart, Besser was able to bring back movement in her body and develop a new practice of pilates which now includes reiki among other innovative Western approaches. Her biggest gift, however, is her ability to see kindness in others and, hopefully after reading this, in herself.

In her darkest hours of depression and immeasurable pain, Nanci Besser took it upon herself to look outside herself and put her pain aside to help others through a project she called, “32 Favors;” 32 favors, 32 people, in 32 days. Naturally, the first thing I thought of was Baskin Robbins and an Ani DiFranco song, but it turns out there is a bigger reason behind the number 32. As Besser explained, “32 is one day more than the longest months. I knew if I could find purpose and meaning in my life and accomplish something every day for a month and a day, that I would be ok.”And so, 32 Favors began. “The only resource I had was time,” Besser said. She felt 32 favors in 32 days was a reasonable and attainable goal. If she had said six months […]

Favor #1 – Stop & Smell The Roses

For my very first favor I asked my dear friend Debra Eckerling, founder of Guided Goals, and her mother, Arlene, what I could do for them as my first favor. This of course, after Arlene had given me a beautiful birthday present (eventhough it was HER birthday, that’s just the classy lady she is)  – hand painted note cards with turquoise, blue, and gold. Arlene is an incredibly talented artist who has had a long career in jewelry design (her pieces have been sold at high end retailers like Neiman Marcus), painting, she even owns a loom for tapestries, among other art forms. Her latest project has been to paint flowers and silk screen onto pillows, scarves, canvases and other mediums. I asked how I could help, specifically with her artwork. She kindly ask that I take photos of flowers – head on so that she can see as much detail and the full flower as possible. It was such a simple and lovely request. On my birthday, I went to the farmer’s market with my friend Jaime. Not only did I take photos of the flowers, I was GIFTED a beautiful bouquet by the vendors. It was the best birthday surprise and provided more proof that if you put the energy and intention out into the world of doing things for others, you will receive ten fold. It has also been a fantastic reminder to […]
